Chapter Twelve

"Come on, twinkle toes. You owe me a dance."

Colonel Brandon got off to a slow start as Brig walked him out of the barn the next morning. She didn't mount him yet, knowing he needed a good warm-up. His movements were sluggish as she led him around the pen. Too bad horses couldn't have canes.

"How's he doing this morning?" asked Mareen.

She and Tilly came inside the pen. Colonel Brandon immediately pulled to go to Mareen. Brig let him go. The colonel's slow start quickly picked up as he made his way to his owner and former dance partner.

As a teenager, Colonel Brandon and Mareen had taken the dressage stage by storm. The horse was already in his prime when they'd partnered up. All these years later, and the colonel's heart was still aching to move, but his body just wasn't willing. Though the body-mind connection seemed to snap back into place as he high stepped it to Mareen.

Mareen smiled at the horse, giving him a nuzzle and a scratch behind his ears. The simple wedding band on her hand left hand caught in the morning sunlight. The former society miss wore worn jeans and boots instead of her normal tailored dresses and heels. Mareen Silver Michaels looked as young, fresh, happy as the days when she'd dance with Colonel Brandon. That's what love could do for a person; change them inside and out.

"He's doing good this morning," Brig said in answer to her sister's earlier question. "He just needs some exercising."

Already, the horse's gait was easier as he walked alongside Mareen around the pen.

"Do you think it'll come to injections?" Mareen asked.

Brig said nothing. It took the silence stretching on for longer than a few seconds for Brig to realize that the question was aimed at her. She was so used to one of her other sisters shouting out the answer that it took her an additional moment to respond to Mareen's question.

"No, I don't think you need to go the pharmaceutical route if you don't want to. We can do supplements to start. Right now, I think he needs routine, exercise, and a modified diet. If we can get some of this weight off, he'll feel an immediate difference."

"Thank you, Brig," said Mareen. "For taking care of him all these years."

Brig shrugged. "You would've done the same for me."

Mareen looked pensive. For so many years, Mareen had tried to hide her true feelings. Over the past week that she'd been with her family on the ranch, that skill was getting harder and harder to maintain.

Mareen wasn't used to others having her back. Even her own mother had used her as a pawn in the divorce. That divide had left Mareen feeling alone, even though she had a big family who had always wanted to love her. Now, Mareen just needed to learn to let them.

Brig insinuated herself between Mareen and the horse. It was easy for Mareen to show her love for the horse. It wasn't so easy to show it to her sisters.
